1906 Fairy Tales 1st ed Orange Fairy Book Andrew Lang Ugly Duckling Magic Mirror
“Once upon a time…”
Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books are a series of children stories that were published in a collection of “colors.” The collection includes nearly 800 stories both true and fiction.
"The series became a landmark in the presentation of traditional tales, for it introduced children to selections of old and new tales of every kind, known and unknown, and from many different sources, at a time when interest in fairy tales was beginning to decline" (Whalley & Chester, p. 141).
The Orange Fairy Book consists of 33 tales from various European traditions such as Jutland, Rhodesia, and Uganda from Africa. The most famous story from this volume is without question “The Ugly Duckling.” This famous tale was originally written by Hans Christian Andersen and tells the story of a homely little bird who suffers abuse from others around him. It has been adapted by multiple media outlets such as opera, film, and theatre!
