American Yacht "VOLUNTEER".
Artist: Thomas Willis.
19th century nautical oil painting on canvas with silkwork.
The painting depicts the schooner-rigged racing yacht: VOLUNTEER, with crew on deck, sails set high and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in the distance.
Title: Volunteer (lower right).
The sails, hull and rigging are of silk that has been hand-stiched through the canvas backing.
Silkwork and oil on canvas.
The stretcher bears a label on the reverse reading: Made By THOMAS WILLIS Marine Pictures in Silk. 126, Stuyvesant Ave. Brooklyn, N.Y.
Housed behind glass in its original parcel gilt and molded frame.
Dimensions: framed: 25 1/2 in. x 31 1/8 in., sight: 20 in. x 26 in.
Condition: good original pre-owned framed estate condition, no repairs noted.
Provenance: Boston, Massachusetts Estate.
AMERICAN YACHT VOLUNTEER was the winner of the American Cup, 1887. Successfully defended the Americas Cup from the challenge of the Scottish yacht, Thistle in New York Harbor.
