Description
1863 MORMON Female Life Among the Mormons Utah Polygamy LDS Maria Ward Mormonism
A scarce and controversial religious treatise regarding the life and struggles of Mormon women entitled, ‘Female Life Among the Mormons.’ Written with the intent to expose flaws, scandal, and lies among the development, infrastructure, doctrine, rites, marital practices, customs, and government of the Mormon church through the eyes of a woman in the church and her eventual escape from it.
Much of the controversy surrounding this works and others from the same author come from the decision to write or “hide” under the pseudonym, “Maria Ward” whist making bold claims about the legitimacy and safety of the Mormon church. Since its 19th-century publication the assumption has been that the author was Elizabeth Cornelia Woodcock Ferris, wife of known anti-Mormon author and politician, Benjamin Gilbert Ferris. However, recent scholarship has been able to show that she was not the author and that the true identity remains a mystery.
