East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A lovely ancient pottery vessel with a thick green glaze, silvery iridescence across the surface, and earthen and mineral deposits inside the interior. The cup rests on a flat base with a simple cylindrical body and a pinched ring handle to one side. Elegant vessels such as this became funerary offerings for the afterlife and were buried with the deceased. Size: 3.75" W x 3.125" H (9.5 cm x 7.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Chip and abrasion to lower body base area and loss to glaze surface, but rest of vessel is intact. Light mineral and earthen encrustations, and silvery iridescence.
