Description

Martin Brothers Stoneware Barrister Bird Jar and Cover
1896
Modeled in a standing pose, with a slightly perplexed expression, mounted on a wood base, inscribed on both the flange of the cover and base Martin Bros., London & Southall, 2-1896. Height overall 13 3/8 in. (34 cm.); height of figure 12 inches (30 cm).

Provenance:

Condition
CONDITION REPORT UPDATED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2022, AT 11:00 AM

Original Condition Report:
appears to be in generally good, undamaged condition; the flange of the cover has been drilled with two small holes near the top and is wired, presumably, as made at the factory (there are two small grooves at the top rim edge of the jar, at the rear, where the wires would rest when the cover is in place); the jar is affixed to the wood base with three old screws, now rusted; the interior of the jar is nice and clean; there are a few minor small nicks to the rim edges at the underside of the cover and to the upper rim rim edge of the jar, not of any consequence; there is a very small hole at the top back side of the bird's head, which has the appearance of being a burst glaze bubble or even a small venting hole, however, it is only evident on the exterior side with no evidence of it on the interior side, apparently, as made, and not of any real consequence; retains the original lot sticker from the Harriman Judd Collection sale; not black lighted

Updated Condition Report:
blacklighted; blacklight reveals professional restoration to the lower section of the bird-form jar, including infilling and overpaint; the restoration is primarily located at the rear and appears to extend fully across and down this back section, namely, the bird's tail feathers; there is also a burst open bubble at the bottom tip end of the tail feather; the feet and bottom area also fluoresce yellow; the head-form cover did not fluoresce yellow under blacklight and appears to be in generally good condition; the flange of the cover has been drilled with two small holes near the top and is wired, presumably, as made at the factory (there are two small grooves at the top rim edge of the jar, at the rear, where the wires would rest when the cover is in place); the jar is affixed to the wood base with three old screws, now rusted; the interior of the jar is nice and clean; there are a few minor small nicks to the rim edges at the underside of the cover and to the upper rim rim edge of the jar, not of any consequence; there is a very small hole at the top back side of the bird's head, which has the appearance of being a burst glaze bubble or even a small venting hole, however, it is only evident on the exterior side with no evidence of it on the interior side, apparently, as made, and not of any real consequence; retains the original lot sticker from the Harriman Judd Collection sale
