Offered here for consideration is an antique 19th century fur trade assumption sash. It is named after the town L'Assomption in Quebec, where they were first woven. They were also called, "ceinture flechees," or, "arrowhead sashes,". They were woven for use by the French voyageurs who plied the waterways of the northern Great Lakes area in canoes during the fur trade era as a belt to keep their heavy woolen coats closed about them. They are long enough to wrap around the waist twice and be knotted in the front, allowing them to also serve as lower back support. Both the Cree-Metis and the French had long established finger weaving traditions, thus the arrowhead sash can be considered an example of the blending of these two cultural streams. They became symbols of cultural identity for the French Canadian community and also for the Cree-Metis indigenous group and remain so to this day. MAKER: Unknown. APPROX AGE: Circa 1770-1850.
