A vibrant and dynamic acrylic and watercolor painting on paper attributed to American artist John Marin. Signed on the bottom right with a 1935 date. The subject depicts a sailboat at sea, which the artist captured energy and movement. A fantastic example of the American impressionism movement. Provenance: From a private collection. Owner purchased painting from a New York gallery, circa 2012. The gallery came across a storage unit with hundreds of small Cy Twombly study paintings / mixed media drawings. Marin and Twombly knew each other in the late 1940s in NYC. Dimensions: 11"h x 11.25"w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. John Marin (1870-1953) was an early American modernist artist. He is known for his abstract landscapes and watercolors. John Marin was among the first American artists to make abstract paintings. Marin is often credited with influencing the Abstract Expressionists. Today his paintings are also represented in several important permanent collections and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art.
