Description
A spectacular original watercolor on wove paper titled "Phenomena Semaphore East" by abstract expressionist artist Paul Jenkins. Hand signed on the bottom right. Verso is annotated with medium, title, and New York 1972. This is an incredible example of Jenkin's signature abstraction style that represents a sense of spirit and vitality. The abstract layering of transparent colors has been described as gem-like veils. Since the 1960s, most of Jenkin's paintings have Phenomena in the title. Jenkin's referred to himself as an Abstract Phenomena, where his paintings would flow out of him with no preconceived notion, as if they were created by a medium. From a private collection. Dimensions: 40.25"h x 32.25"w (framed). In very good vintage condition. Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) was an influential post World War II American abstraction and is much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring. His first solo exhibition in New York was in 1956 with the Martha Jackson Gallery, a leading gallery of the time, and with the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York purchasing a painting from the exhibition success followed. In 1959, Peggy Guggenheim purchased a Paul Jenkins painting from the artist's studio in Paris further cementing his status.
