Superb Horatio Nelson 1802 ALS
Royal Navy Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) Autograph Letter Signed, “Nelson & Bronte”, 1p on a bifold sheet measuring 7.125" x 8.813" and tipped-in to cardstock measuring 8.25" x 9.75", Merton, October 3, 1802. Docketed at verso. Folds with small areas of paper loss neatly repaired, scattered foxing and soiling, else in very good condition.
Nelson writes to Harry Harwood, Esq. regarding a former shipmate, George Antrim, who had previously served under Nelson, "has great fears of appearing before you terrific gentle men because he has served very little in England but chiefly in the Med[iterranea]n where I put him for his good conduct acting in a real vacancy in July 1799”, and begging to introduce him to Harwood's notice. Midshipman George Antrim had been wounded on HMS Vanguard at the Battle of the Nile.
In 1799, Nelson was created Duke of Bronte, of the Kingdom of Sicily, by King Ferdinand III of Sicily, and after briefly experimenting with the signature "Bronte Nelson of the Nile", he signed himself "Nelson & Bronte" for the rest of his life.
