Mentions of Slaves 1785 Extensive Inventory List of Deceased Capt.
A "True and Perfect Inventory of the Royal & Personal Estate of Capt: Joseph Morgan of Groton Late Decd". 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8.25" x 13.25", Groton, Connecticut, dated December 27, 1785. The lengthy document describes the various quantities of goods, property, and resources belonging to Capt. Morgan, including clothing, tools, animals, home goods, etc. Of note are two entries: "1 negro bed & furniture" along with "Cash £1:6:6 to one old negro man". The inventory has flattened folds, with light toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. Worn edges. Overall very good.
Captain Joseph Morgan (1706-1785) was born in Groton, New London, Connecticut to Deacon William Morgan and Margaret Avery. He married Dorothy Avery in December 1735, and the couple had 4 sons and 4 daughters. In 1744 he was commissioned an ensign and was promoted to captain two years later. As captain of the militia company of Groton, he fought during the French and Indian War and served at Fort William Henry during the campaign of 1757. Morgan died on December 1, 1785, at the age of 79, and was buried in Morgan Pond Cemetery, New London, Connecticut.
