Ericsson, John: ALS by the American Design Engineer of the USS Monitor in the Civil War and Other Innovations in Ship Building. Fine Content (1803-1899) Swedish-born American engineer, John Ericsson is famously known for his improvements in the design of the steam engine for varied uses in the industrial age, the screw propeller and later working on war ships when in 1862 he designed and supervised the building in a mere 101 days of the USS Monitor that introduced a new era in warfare. Rotating turrets and capable of firing torpedos which played a central role in the Battle of Hampton Roads.
Fine letter addressing technical issues and demand for information regarding engines being built and references Otis (Elisha) and his engines used in elevators and elevating platforms, and insinuates as competition. He continues that "with our great demonstration close at hand, we have nothing to fear". 2pp March5,1949 fine condition, very small fold split held in check with archival tape.
