19th Century California History Collection: Mining, Banking, Signed Check by Adolph Sutro, Document Signed by Horatio King, + Mariano Vallejo Sig. A fine collection of California history having 18 pieces which are quite compelling from 1847 to 1925. Items include
1.) A signed check by Adolph Sutro former mayor of San Francisco and the historic public philanthropy in his building the Sutro Baths. Check is dated 1897 drawn from The Nevada Bank of San Francisco a year before his death.
2.) Horatio King signed document, former Postmaster General of the US and the "author" of the FIRST denial of the right of secession when he warned South Carolina that Representative J.D. Ashmore with his continued use of the franking privilege was evidence that he and his state were part of the Union in 1861. This is document signed asking for recommendation for the appointment of a Postmaster in California.
3.) Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. instrumental provincial and military leader who helped California attain political independence from Mexico and famously introduced vineyards and the first wines in Sonoma Valley. Beautifully autographed calling card with legitimate COA
4.) Commodore John Sloat Exceptional ALS dated 1841, one page. Sloat was a Naval officer who took over California from Mexico at the outbreak of the Mexican War letter accompanying a note received from the USS Columbus.
The balance are fascinating documents regarding gold bullion deposits. correspondence by mining companies including in Van Couver B.C., A fascinating typed report of conditions of the Pleasant Valley Mines, California for June July 1882, including a hand executed layout of the mine, company store receipts, three early postmarked covers from Wells Fargo & Co., San Francisco, gold assay deposit (dated 1919) El Dorado Gold mining report, and other pieces. The hard to read pieces have transcriptions.
Overall in fine to excellent condition and recommend highly viewing in person. Estimated Value $300 - 600
