IMAO KEINEN (1845-1924), whose original name was Imao Isaburo, was born in Kyoto and studied painting with Umegata Tokyo and Suzuki Hyakunen. In 1880 at the age of 35 he began to teach at the Kyoto Prefecture School of Painting, and by 1904 he had become a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household. In 1919 he was made a member of the Imperial Art Academy and acclaimed as an important Japanese style painter. Keinen specialized in kacho-e (flower and bird prints) and was known for his realism and attention to detail. His best known work is Bird and Flower Albums by Keinen which was published in 1891. It is a set of four volumes, each with 40 prints.
