Japanese Woodblock Print, originally published c.1900, this is a late edition carved by Kawasaki and printed by Ohashi

SIZE IN INCHES: 6" x 4.25 inches

KAJITA HANKO (1870-1919) was an artist and Nihonga painter. Son of a metal engraver (previous generations had been keepers of the shogun's hawks). In his youth, said to have supplemented the family's meagre earnings by painting fans and handkerchiefs for export. Studied with Nabeta Gyokuei and Ohara Koson. During the late 1880s worked as a designer for the Kiryu Kosho Gaisha in Yokohama. In the 1890s took interest in Nihonga. 1897-1905 produced many illustrations for newspapers and magazines such as Bungei Kurabu and Shin Shosetsu. Recognized in 1905 for postcard designs. Produced few large-scale works suited to exhibitions. Students included Kobayashi Kokei and Maeda Seison.
