Description

A VERY FINE & SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON, PALEKH C. 1890. In this rarely encountered subject, Saint John the Theologian is shown being placed in a cross-form grave by his disciples on the island of Patmos. Rendered on a large panel with gilt incised ground and extensive use of chrysography, the figures finely painted and the landscape rendered in the typical Palekh style and pallet with great detail and subtle shading. At top center God the Father delivers a blessing above highly stylized Palekh type clouds. The inscription on the lower border identifies this as “The Death of the Holy John the Theologian”. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (45cm x 37.5cm).
