Description
Pot lid for X. Bazin Perfumed Bear Grease recovered from the S.S. Central America. Classic American pot lid, 3-3/16" diameter, 3/4" thick, 70.9 grams. Xavier Bazin was a French perfumer who moved to Philadelphia in 1842. Bazin managed Roussel's perfume production on Chestnut Street, and after he had saved up $1,500 over 8 years, he purchased that department from Roussel. In 1875 Bazin took on a partner, and became X. Bazin & Co. The company sold out to another interest in 1884. The Bazin and Roussel products were highly marketed by the San Francisco wholesale drug firm of Langley & Michaels. This piece is #BJ 137 in Sonny Jackson's American Pot Lids, 1987. It is rare, listed as less than 5 known. The difference between this and a more common variety is the fancy border.Date: 1857Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance: SS Central America Collection
