Mandala of Rakta Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara, Tibet, c.16th century or earlier, gouache on cotton with gilt accents, 21.75 x 18.75 inches, unframed, mandala with central figure of Avalokiteshvara shown here as Rakta, in union with consort, holding prayer beads, lotus and jewel, square around central lotus marked with the jina colors, subsidiary mandalas in each of the four corners, upper register with fifteen images of deities and teachers illustrating the lineage of the Nyingma sect, various deities at bottom including Hayagriva, Mahakala and other feirce protectors, later Tibetan writing in red on reverse.
Condition
General good condition with age appropriate wear including creasing and thin areas of paint loss, top right corner suffering from staining which has washed out the images of 5 figures along the top row plus part of the subsidiary mandala in that areas, other areas of light staining, all four corners with heavier areas of wear. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
