Description
After the model attributed to Girolamo Campagna (Italian, 1549–1626): A patinated bronze figural and shell salt
Probably Italian, late 18th/early 19th century
Cast as a kneeling classical male supporting a scallop shell on his shoulders, raised on a waisted oval plinth base, 18.8cm high overall
Footnotes:
Born in Verona, the sculptor Girolamo Campagna went to Venice in 1572, where he spent the majority of his life and studied under both Jacopo Sansovino and Danese Cattaneo, completing many of the latter's works.

There are two variants to this Renaissance model of a male figure supporting a scallop shell on his shoulders, both traditionally attributed to the hand of the Campagna from documented examples of similar figures. The offered version depicts a kneeling classical youth, whilst the alternative version depicts an older standing classical male.

A 16th century bronze of this model, seemingly unfinished, is in the Capodimonte Museum, Naples and a further gilt bronze model dated to 1600-1700 and catalogued as Venetian, previously attributed to Campagna is in the Victorian and Albert Museum.

A comparable earlier (16th century) gilt bronze model from the collection of Embden Peel & Humphris, Ltd., London and J.J. Klejman, New York was sold at Sothebys New York, June 8, 2007, lot 438.
