Description
A CHELSEA OCTAGONAL SAUCER, CIRCA 1752
painted in the Kakiemon palette with the `Flaming Tortoise' pattern within a border of iron-red and gilt scrolling foliage
Sibyl Hermele Collection label, 12cm wide
The pattern is a direct copy of a Japanese original. The tortoise is emblematic of the Minogame or Raincoat tortoise, which lived a thousand years, and got its name as at the end of five hundred years it acquired on its shell a plantation of water weeds which streamed out behind. In conjunction with the crane it is a symbol of longevity
