DESCRIPTION: After Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807, Switzerland). Oil on metal. Unsigned. Portrait of a woman with birds in a basket. In vintage gilt wood frame. Plaque on frame M.A. Kaufmann, R.A. 1775. Back with label that reads M. Angelica Kaufmann R.A. Born 1741. Died 1807. One of the Original Members of the Royal Academy. Born in Chur, Switzerland in 1741, Kauffman was quickly recognized as a child prodigy. After moving to London in 1766, Kauffman struck up a close friendship with Joshua Reynolds, commemorated in the portraits they painted of each other. When the Royal Academy of Arts was established in 1768 with Joshua Reynolds as President, she and Mary Moser were the only two women invited to become Founder Members. MEASUREMENTS: Sight 7-1/8" high x 6" wide; frame 3-5/8" wide. CONDITION: Hanging hole to top of metal, hidden by frame. Overall craquelure.
