Description
Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful hand carved wood statue of the Buddha, depicted standing with one hand forward forming the abhaymudra gesture, symbolizing a calm and reassuring presence. He wears voluminous flowing ornate robes, his waist band inlaid with translucent glass shards. His face with a serene expression, tightly curled hair nodes, elongated ears, standing on an integral lotus pedestal. Buddhist hand symbols are often presented in specific styles to represent different aspects of Buddha and Buddhist values. This gesture is also called "Gesture of Fearlessness" or "blessing" or "fearless mudra." The top of the rounded coiffure has a hollow socket that may have held a separate ushnisha spire. The lacquered wood was painted in a golden hue, now worn to reveal the lustrous black surface below. Size: 12" L x 8" W x 34" H (30.5 cm x 20.3 cm x 86.4 cm); 43.5" H (110.5 cm) on included custom stand.
