JAMES RIVER, VIRGINIA AND RELATED DECORATED STONEWARE JARS, LOT OF TWO, salt-glazed, each of ovoid form with incised shoulder ring and applied arched handles, comprising an approximately two-gallon capacity example with slightly flaring galleried rim having an inner seat, and an approximately one-gallon capacity Sweeney example with squared rim and beaded neck ring, each with two applied arched handles. Each having brushed cobalt decorations including one with bent tulip and foliate design and one featuring cloud-like decoration on both sides, each having additional cobalt to handle terminals. Stephen B. Sweeney (1799-1862), Bailey's Creek, Henrico Co., VA; and S.S. Perry, possibly at the Schermerhorn Pottery, Richmond. Mid 19th century. 9 3/8" and 11 3/4" H.
