Artist Biography
Therman Statom was born in Winter Haven, Florida in 1953. He studied at the Pilchuck Glass Center and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from the Pratt Institue of Art and Design. He has taught at the Pilchuck school and University of California, Los Angeles. Statom is best known for his painted ladders, houses, chairs, etc., constructed out of plate glass, blown glass objects, plywood, and found objects. He has also received commissions for countless permanent large-scale installations, including the Los Angeles Central Public Library and the Toledo Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in the California African-American Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, High Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian's American Art Museum, Vero Beach Museum of Art, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and many others.
Good overall condition; light surface wear to exterior panels; one glass element inside work detached and resting at bottom.
