In 1982, Keith Haring had his Soho gallery debut with an acclaimed one-man show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, which continues to offer his work today. The drawing offered here includes some of Haring’s most easily recognized and iconic symbols – the barking dog, the outlined figure, and gyrating snakes with lashing tongues.

Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. His animated imagery has "become a widely recognized visual language". Haring’s popularity grew from his spontaneous drawings in the New York subways – chalk outlines of figures, dogs, and other stylized images on blank black advertising spaces. Between 1982 and 1989, Haring created more than 50 public artworks, many for charities, schools, hospitals, and day care centers. His Pop Shop, opened in 1986, selling shirts, posters and other items showing his imagery, was Haring’s effort to make his work more accessible and available at reasonable prices. Before his death from AIDS in 1989, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs.
