Description
BONNARD PIERRE: (1867-1947) French painter, a leading figure in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism. A.L.S., P Bonnard, two pages, 8vo, Villa du Bosquet, Le Cannet, Alpes-Maritimes, n.d. ('Lundi'; annotated in another hand 9th November 1936), to Rodrigues, in French. Bonnard informs his correspondent that 'Je vous fais un second envoi de dessin et une aquarelle. Il faudrait faire encadrer le tout s'il est encore temps.' (Translation: 'I am sending you a second drawing and a watercolour. It should be framed if there is still time'), further supplying the name and address of his framer, remarking 'Il connait mon genre' (Translation: 'He knows my genre'), and concluding by remarking that maybe he will be in Paris to see the exhibition if it runs until December. In a postscript to the integral leaf Bonnard states 'Pour les prix demandez de 4 a 600 Fr vous prendrez votre commission. Pour l'aquarelle je veux 2500. Un dessin n'est pas a vendre je l'ai marque derriere' (Translation: 'For prices ask from 4 to 600 Francs, you will take your commission. For the watercolour I want 2500. A drawing is not for sale, I have marked it on the back'). A couple of very light, extremely minor stains, VG Jacques Rodrigues-Henriques (1886-1968) French art dealer who frequently exhibited works by Bonnard in the 1930s.
