Hard boards, embossed hard boards with five raised bands on spine and blind decorations, original publisher's bluish-green cloth with gold lettering on spine and gold decoration on front board [a little shelf wear, spine damage on top: see photo]; 5.3/4" x 9"; name and "1894" inside cover; pencil- name on top of the title page; vi + 1 + 272 pages including Bibliography + publisher adds, a little foxing, very good condition.
Lockhart's translations of the Spanish ballads appeared originally in Blackwood's magazine, and were published in a separate form in 1822. The American edition is based on the new revised London edition of 1841. In the Advertisement to the American Edition, Wiley states that "[N]o departure whatever being made from Mr. Lockhart's text. To add to the interest of the volume, the spirited article from the Edinburgh Review is given, by way of Preliminary Essay; an analytical account of the Romance of the Cid, with specimen passages, has been subjoined; and at the end has been placed a Bibliographical List, prepared for the present edition, of the the books containing the original Ballads, and of writings pertaining to the whole subject.
