Over the course of his rather short lifetime, Marquard Gude (1635–1689) travelled extensively and invested considerable zeal and a huge amount of money in order to acquire a monumental collection of medieval and Renaissance codices in Latin and Greek. It all adds up to what is probably the most important 17th-century private collection of manuscripts north of the Alps.
