Victorian Silverplate Hot Water Urn and Associated Plateau

mid-19th century,
the urn of serpentine-lobed baluster form above a domed pedestal base, with robust acanthus-mounted handles, key and feet, the domed lid with acanthus bud finial lifting to reveal the original billet chamber and cap, the whole decorated with reeded floral and foliate banding, h. 18-1/2", l. 12-3/4", w. 13";
the small circular plateau with ogee-molded frame and shaped rocaille skirt and feet, fitted with a conforming mirrored plate, h. 2-3/4", dia. 12-1/2".


Provenance: Private collection, Lafayette and New Orleans, Louisiana.

**In fair condition. The base of the urn has had an extensive compression dent around its perimeter repaired, with extensive solder on the underside and considerable rippling around the domed area of the pedestal base. Wear and dents to the lead-filled handles, finial and banding, well-covered by later electroplating. Not tested for water fastness. The plateau - of like date but not originally paired with the urn - is in better condition, with nice detail, minimal wear and no evidence of replating. The mirrored plate, however, does have some black spotting throughout, most notable around the perimeter and a 3" x 5" section just off of center. Wood base solid.
