Description
first half 19th century, 203 x 151 cm, North East Caucasus, Daghestan
BORALEVI, ALBERTO, Sumakh. Flat-Woven Carpets of the Caucasus. Florence 1986, no. 26
Alternately dark blue and light green diamond-shaped medallions with an animal-tree interior drawing lie on the central axis of the red field. The medallions are flanked by white leaves with slanting serrated outlines that are aligned vertically, and combine into the sides of a design bar in which the spaces not covered by the primary motifs are filled with abstract animals. The firm weaving structure, the style of drawing, the border ornamentation and the light colours suggest that this very rare sumakh was made in Daghestan and is attributable to the Lesghi group. – New overcasting along the sides, original end finishes. Very good overall condition.
Provenance: Siedek Collection, Dusseldorf
