No half-title page; engraved title page has a pound sign before "100" ['1' in '100' looks more like corrected '0']; six studs on trunk (no priority). Second state of Errata Sheet identifying 10 corrections on 14 lines. [Gimble, A72.]. Frontispiece, extra engraved title page and 38 plates [all listed plates are present].
Marbled hard boards, leather spine and corners [wear, leather damages and repairs on spine, leather creases between spine and boards, boards are attached]; marbled endpapers have surface damages [see photo]; 5.1/2" x 8.1/2"; "E. Phifoon July 1882" is pencil written on the first blank page; steel engraved frontispiece and engraved title page are separated by the tissue guard; xiv, + errata with verso blank, 624 pages + 38 steel engraved plates [40 with frontis and engraved title page], by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"]; engraved title page has an edge wear, the first pages including Errata have a c.1/8" crease at the margin; the surface of the plates is sporadically darkened [could be result of the printers tint-- see photos]; tight binding, good / very good condition.
"Martin Chuzzlewit" is listed as number five in Michael Sadleir's list of Charles Dickens comparative scarcities.
Quite a large part of the story-line takes place in North America, and the book offers a not very positive impression of the country which Dickens had observed during his first journey there in 1842.
