First Nations, Northern Canada, Nunavut, Pond Inlet, Inuit, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-made stone and leather doll of a man dressed in traditional winter clothing with a fringed leather and cotton parka and a fur trimmed hood, likely rabbit, and leather pants. His body is composed of cotton stuffed with a dense filling, and his boots, mitten hands, and head are separate pieces hand-carved from soapstone then attached to the leather and cloth limbs. A paper tag around the ankle has a hand-written label that is the artist's name: "Lydia Akumlik, Pond Inlet." Size: 12" L x 4.5" W (30.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Insect activity and insect encrustations on the parka hood fur. We recommend professionally cleaning this piece and storing in a protective case. Losses and active flaking to fur trim and light discoloration and staining to leather.
