North America, Northwestern United States or Canada, likely Tlingit or Haida, ca. mid-20th century CE. A handsome hand-carved wooden pipe in the form of a fox inlaid with faceted glass eyes. The canine crouches on broad, stable legs, with the ears perked forward, the snout forms the ventilation hole, and the back supports a rimmed receptacle with an iron filter screen. The long stem tapers slightly to the inhalation hole and mouthpiece. This pipe has signs of use, with remains of tobacco scent and a smooth patina throughout. Size: 9" L x 2" W x 2" H (22.9 cm x 5.1 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
