Description
**Originally Listed At $8000**
Ancient Eastern Mediterranean, Greco-Phoenician, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A huge white limestone vessel, created in two sections, with a graceful form. The body is piriform, with a broad shoulder where the two halves join on thick, wide rims. The body tapers to a wide, flaring foot with incised lines around it to give it an interesting texture. The neck flares outward in a similar form, creating symmetry in the form of the vessel. Two crescent moons are in relief on the upper shoulder. The handle has a delicate, abstract floral motif on its lower terminal and a similar motif on its upper one. The form of the handle is graceful, with a gentle interior curve and sharper one on the exterior. This massive vessel was likely used in a temple. Size: 15.75" W x 31.75" H (40 cm x 80.6 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
