Doc Curt Connors, who concocted a special serum to restore his missing arm and became the Lizard in ASM #5, has the first of many relapses. Spidey's own arm gets banged up while fighting his scaly foe, and the book ends with Peter Parker hating himself: "What's WRONG with me? Why do things work OUT this way? When will I come to my senses and stop bucking FATE... and give up being SPIDER-MAN forever?!!" And thus begins Spidey's Stan-mandated backslide into endless neurotic self-scourging, a negation of the hard-earned character development of the Ditko era.
