Description
1751 Daphnis & Chloe Longus Greek Erotica Sexuality Pirates Adventures French
“For there was never any yet that wholly could escape love, and never shall there be any, never so long as beauty shall be, never so long as eyes can see.”
― Longus, Daphnis and Chloe
Longo Sophist was a 3rd-century BC Greek novelist known only for the novel Pastoral Love of Dafni and Cloe which was attributed to him by Gottfried Jungermann in 1605. This novel tells the story of Daphnis and Chloe, a young boy and girl, who are left to die by their parents, rescued and raised by goat-herders, fall in love, and are capture by pirates, all before they are recognized by their birth parents and married.
Dafni and Cloe is a daunting tale of unusual eroticism. Longus explores the unconventional sides of sexuality and focuses heavily on the physical aspects of a relationship. Longus discusses elements of rape and masochism within the context of sexuality.
This 1751 French edition was translated by Jacques Amyot and contains notes and commentary on the work at the end.
