Title: The System of Natural HistoryDescription: FIRST EDITION. FOUR VOLUMES. Written by M. de Buffon, Carefully abridged: and the Natural History of Insects; compiled chiefly from Swammerdam, Brookes, Goldsmith, &c. Embellished with Elegant Engravings on Wood. Antique style calf, lineal borders. Morocco gilt titles, raised bands, gilt volume number to spines. Printed by and for W Davison, 1814. The text of this abridged edition of Buffon's famous work was based on an edition of 1791-2 published in Perth. The work was a success, enabling Davison to issue an abridged seven-volume chapbook set of the work with individual titles such as "A Natural History of British Quadrupeds" and "A Natural History of British Birds". Each volume contained between 36 and 42 woodcuts. THIS FOUR VOLUME SET IS MUCH RARER THAN THE CHAPBOOK EDITION. Although Hugo attributed many of the wood-engravings to Thomas Bewick, it would appear from Bewick's own records, and a letter from Davison to Bewick dated May 11th 1813, that although the cuts in Davison's specimen book were marked 'B' for Bewick, they are by another hand, and probablY copied from Bewick's own work. It is possible that some were by an apprentice of Bewick's, Isaac Nicholson, who by 1811 was working on his own account. [William Davison's New Specimen of Cast-Metal Ornaments and Wood Types, pp. 14-19]. A VERY SCARCE AND UNIQUE SET IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.Product Details: Publisher: Alnwick, for W.
