Description
Hand-embroidery on linen, circa 1950. Dimensions: 9" x 50". Providence’s Arts and Crafts extraordinaire, S.R. Burleigh, formed the Art Workers Guild in 1886 to decorate homes celebrating beauty and handcraftsmanship. This linen table runner was hand embroidered and a tribute to the nearby Deerfield Blue and White Society inspiring women to create useful and expressive work. Legend has it that Sarah Burleigh stitched this work and it was passed down to the woodcut artist Eliza Gardiner (1870 – 1955). Could it have been shown in the textile division of the 1901 Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Providence Art Club? We will never know… but it's the kind of treasure you find in Providence, a city rich in culture and history.
