Description
A Chippendale carved walnut chest-on-chest Philadelphia, PA, late 18th century
(H: 78 in. W: 41 3/4 in. D: 23 in.)
Upper case with molded top, three over two short drawers, above three graduated long drawers, the lower case with waist molding over three graduated long drawers, molded base on straight bracket feet, bearing brass plaque inscribed "Catherine Wistar Morris (1772-1859)."

Note
Catherine Wistar Morris was the daughter of Samuel Morris (1734-1812) and Rebecca Wistar (1735-1791). She did not marry. Two of her textile works, a needlework sampler and sewing case, are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (acc. no. 1998-161-18 and 1998-162-27).
Condition
Dry surface, appears to retain original hardware- one lock plate different and broken on second long drawer in base; scattered wear and losses to drawer corners and drawer lips, original feet, some old mends to feet, both rear feet lacking pads, front foot brackets missing decorative return.
