Description
TOLLIVER, Mose (American, 1925-2006). Self Portrait. Circa 1980s-2000s. Acrylic on ¼” thick board. 25 ½ x 22 ½”. Some mild wear. An excellent example of Outsider Art. Tolliver was born and raised near Montgomery, Alabama. In the 1960s, he suffered a terrible injury to his legs at his job, when a half-ton of marble fell off a forklift and crushed them. Unable to work, he began painting full-time (he had said that he had painted casually before the accident). His work has been displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), The National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Centre Pompidou (Paris), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), and many other distinguished museums or galleries. Provenance: purchased directly from the artist.
