General Peter Muhlenberg Signed Port of Philadelphia Customs Document for the Ship "Mount Vernon" with a Chest containing Sixty Pounds of Chinese tea from Canton
PETER MUHLENBERG (1746-1807). Revolutionary War Brigadier General and Clergyman who served under Baron von Steuben and aided in the assaults on Stony Point and Yorktown.
April 10, 1805-Dated Federal Period, Partly-Printed Document Signed, "P Muhlenberg" as Federal Customs Collector of Philadelphia, measuring 10" x 3.25", 1 page, Port of Philadelphia, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Small trivial tone spot in the far left selvage, old mounting hinge on the top edge of the blank reverse. Document certifies an import from the Ship "Mount Vernon" one chest of sixty pounds of Canton, Chinese tea. Bright, clean and fresh with vivid black printed text and a massive, bold signature of "P Muhlenberg" measuring about 2.75" long, Co-signed "W. Bache" Inspector. William Bache was born May 31, 1773 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Richard Bache and Sarah Franklin (daughter of Benjamin Franklin).
