Charles Grosjean was responsible for some of Tiffany & Co.'s most important flatware designs of the late 19th century, including certainly one of their most creative patterns Lap Over Edge. Introduced in 1880, Lap Over Edge captured the Aesthetic Movement's mania for all things Japanese by incoporating different designs on all the place pieces. Japanese artisans used slight variations in design so that no two pieces were ever the same, and Tiffany's creative craftsmen took up the challenge ensuring that each piece of silver is decorated with a different bird, plant, insect, animal or sea creature. The pattern was hugely expensive and also a hit with Tiffany & Co.'s demanding clientele who continued to press the firm to create new pieces to ensure that their dining tables out shone their neighbours.
Tiffany Silver Flatware: When Dining Was an Art, by William Hood Jr., notes the existence of a rare flatware service with all the names of the decoration noted on the reverse of the pieces, which these pieces also have.
