Description
South Asia, eastern or northeastern India, Krishnanagar or Lucknow, ca. 19th century CE. A highly detailed pottery figurine of a male wearing a turban, a belted robe, and friendly mutton chops as he leans on an object behind him. Enveloped in liberal remains of red pigment, the figure gazes downward, displaying generously-lidded eyes, a flat nose, and thin lips. Clay figure modelling of humans, animals, and scenes from daily life has been widely practiced throughout India for hundreds of years. A greater trend towards naturalism increased with the arrival of Western traders, who took souvenirs from India back to their home countries. The figures of Krishnanagar and Lucknow were especially noted for their careful attention to fine detail and portrait-like realism, as demonstrated in this example. Size: 1.6" W x 3.2" H (4.1 cm x 8.1 cm)
