Description
Gordon Fiscus (1902-2005) Original Oil on Canvas Board "Montery" California. Unsignedt. Measures in frame 29"x23"x3". Weight 4 pds. The remarkable landscape and seascape paintings by artist Gordon Fiscus (1902-2005) have earned him a lifetime of respect and praise. A full member of the Brown County Art Guild in the 1990s, he painted for many decades in California prior to moving to Brown County in 1985, and his work generated a following of enthusiastic collectors. Born in Indianapolis, he was interested in art at an early age. Fiscus enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1922, at the age of 20. He majored in commercial art because his father wanted him to be able to earn a living. He took a few landscape classes at the Herron School of Art with Randolph Coats, who was encouraging and helpful to the young artist. He also studied at the Herron School of Art under William Forsythe and at the Art Institute of Chicago. Arriving in San Francisco in the early 1930s, he continued his education at the CSFA under Maynard Dixon. Fiscus had his first one man show in San Francisco in 1934 and worked in the art department of the Call Bulletin. He later worked in commercial art in Indianapolis and taught for 18 years at The Herron Art School. From 1964 to 1977 he lived and painted on the Monterey Peninsula and then in Nashville, Indiana. PROVENANCE: Family by descent.
