Description
A Moche Supernatural Collage Vessel Peru, c. 300 - 500 AD One of the rare "supernatural collage" scenes on a stirrup-spout vessel. This one a crowd of figures including a large figure standing under a diminutive head and arms of the Moche god Ai Apec which emanates from under a pointed arch. To the right is a running warrior, to the left a standing figure. These two are surmounted by a jaguar head with a snake body. At back are two centipedes and a scorpion. Hollow earthenware painted in red-brown on cream. In very good condition, spout broken off and reattached at joint of handle, a chip on lower part of handle, the paint faded in many areas, with some paint loss here and there. Provenance: Property from the M. Louise Beren Revocable Trust Exhibited: Wichita Art Museum, Wichita, KS Height: 9 inches
