Description
Naqada II-Dynasty 1, circa 3650-2649 B.C. A stylised grey stone elephant head amulet with pierced eyes and a long trunk. Cf. Petrie, W.M.F., Amulets, London, 1914, pl.XXXVIII, no.212a-m. 62 grams, 60 mm (2 3/8 in.). Acquired in the 1970s. From a private French estate of Mr G. Ex Rieunier & Associes, Paris, France, in 2007. Such amulets were produced in ivory and stone and were once considered to represent the head of a bovid, although more recent discoveries at Hierakonpolis, where actual elephants were buried, have confirmed that the amulets represent stylised elephant heads (for a discussion with examples, see Patch, D.C., Dawn of Egyptian Art, New York, 2011, pp.52-54, figs.50-52).
