Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Pre- Dynastic, Naqada III, ca. 3250 to 3100 BCE. A finely hand-carved stone mace head with a hand- drilled perforation through the center. The stone is a creamy white hue with a large area of a darker umber color. The piriform body tapers to a wider opening that would have been the socket for hafting onto a shaft or pole. This hefty mace may have been designed for status and ceremony rather than for battle. Mace heads shaped like these have been found in Naqada II tombs of both men and women and they may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, but little is certain about this very early period in Egyptian history. Size: 2.54" W x 2.8" H (6.5 cm x 7.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
