BIOGRAPHY:
Shirley was born in Princeton, Illinois and at the age of two her mother decided to move the family to Glendale, California, to keep her mechanic husband out of the cold garages of Illinois. Shirley was a bit of a tomboy and took to fishing and learning how to tie flies with her father at an early age. Her love of the outdoors continued through her life as she backpacked and fished in the Sierra mountain range. The backpack was traded in for a trailer and Twin Lakes became her favorite place to camp and fish with her parents and her partner, Pauline Taylor.Shirley retired from Lockheed Martin in 1984, where she and Pauline had worked as the only two female drafters and "non-degreed" mechanical engineers among all the men, who adored them both. Even years after her retirement Shirley would not divulge a word about the secret projects she worked on at Lockheed Martin.Shirley and Pauline spent several years and almost all of their weekends flipping houses in Carmel in the early 1970s. However, in 1976 they found a house on Scenic Drive that was in the perfect location and there they built the Brass Ring. Little details of the house were never finished because they then began taking ceramics classes at Monterey Peninsula College.Shirley was an amazing artist and got her commercial arts degree at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles as a young woman. After she retired, ceramics became the avenue for Shirley to express her love of color, textures and the abstract. Shirley and Pauline traveled to China and Japan to learn various ceramic techniques. Their house was filled with art pieces that they had made and pieces from various other ceramic artists it was a remarkable gallery. Thanks to the assistance of Art Without Boundaries and an art therapy intern from Vitas Hospice care, Shirley continued painting up until the very end.
