Coconut Shell Bowl- Abelam, or Middle Sepik, PNG, 20th C. Coconut shell cut longitudinally with shaped edge and raised face peaking upward at one end. Inside shows patina of use. Outside is carved with a central face and surrounding, incised patterns filled with white, orange and dark yellow pigments. Age cracks present. Provenance: Leo and Lillian Fortess Collection #2043, Kaneohe, Hawaii; Stephen Meder Collection #2.L.02, Philadelphia, PA. Size: 3'' x 5.25'' x 4.25'' (8 x 13 x 11 cm).
