Description
Taino Pre-Columbian Long Marble Vomit Spatula with human form at one end. The head is reversed 180 degrees, a design element unique to the Taino. Another design found in the Taino repertoire is the dog head nose, seen on subjects face. The hands rest on the shoulders and join on the back as an undulating line. The shoulders and hips have shallow round pits denoting “soft” spots on the anatomy where spirits can enter and exit the body. There are two suspension holes next to the wrists. On reverse a compounded bird headed bird head symbol covers the back. Note: the size and width of this spatula seems impractical for use and may be a physical symbolic representation used for ritual display. Private collection. Marble. Size: 14'' x 2'' x 1'' (36 x 5 x 3 cm). Curated by Larry Roberts, author of Taino Sculpture Art of the Gods and Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust.
