Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Sixth plate tintype of a young Native American man, likely Winnebago, posed with a war club and bird arrows. Ca 1865.Â
Sixth plate tintype with hand-tinting. (A few surface mars.) Housed in brass mat and frame with glass (minor tarnish).
A beautifully hand-tinted tintype of a young subject with a loose, unkempt hairstyle, typical of the Winnebago, cradling a war club in one arm while holding several birding arrows. The image possibly dates to ca 1865, soon after the small Winnebago reservation was founded by treaty in Nebraska, following 12 prior removals from their original homeland in Wisconsin.
Our sincere thanks to Mike Cowdrey for providing information regarding this tintype.Â
